A stroll down the lane will take you to the slowly meandering river Blavet, unspoilt but beautifully maintained. Head towards St. Nicolas des Eaux and you will soon come to l'ecluse (weir)[photo], the perfect spot for a picnic or snooze in the sun. On a little further, just before you reach the bridge which crosses the Blavet river into St. Nicolas des Eaux, you will find the pretty little Chapel of St. Gildas nestled under a rock.
At some stage, whether you walk or drive you will discover the picturesque village of St.Nicolas-des-Eaux. The local people take great pride in their village and everywhere you look there are tubs and pots joining the abundance of flowers already adorning the riverside.
Here there are several bars, creperies and restaurants all overlooking the river where you can take refreshment and admire the scenery and wildlife. Alternatively, for the self-sufficient, there is a shady picnic area right at the waters edge. A riverboat tour is a must and this can be boarded from the moorings here. At the far end of the village there can be found cycle, canoe and pedalo hire. Here there is also an hotel with an open air swimming pool with sun-loungers and a poolside bar that is for general use.
In the summer months, to celebrate the various festival dates, the village hosts fetes and open-air dances where you can join the locals in their festivities.
A place to get away from it all and enjoy the French countryside, whether it's fishing, walking, sketching, cycling, canoeing or birdwatching, St. Nicolas-des-Eaux offers something for everyone.
